Owatonna has great community spirit and the residents support each other in countless ways, most of them charitable. But we also appreciate having a vibrant local economy. The dozens of locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, florists, gift shops, photography studios, hair salons, barbers, and trade businesses like plumbers, HVAC, and electricians take pride in giving great customer service and earning trust every day.

Our local bookstore, Little Professor Book Center, owned by John Meixner, is no exception. He graciously sponsored my book signing in front of his store on Saturday, June 4 during the local farmers market. John is always willing to support local authors as well as the many charities that ask to put a flyer in his store windows to advertise their cause.

The weather was perfect and I was more than pleased with the turnout. I signed books for some current friends and made some new ones. Notable was the young woman who was thrilled to buy a book about one of her favorite places in the world, the North Shore of Lake Superior. Another surprising coincidence was signing a book for a couple who actually own property in the “real” Castle Danger! Small world.

Finally, the sweetest “little old lady” bought a book and had me sign it for her after she asked enough questions to make sure it was a book she’d be interested in reading. She added mine to the stack of four or five others resting on her walker as she made her way to the checkout counter. I’ll never forget her comment: “Books are my treasures.”

Here’s to all the books we treasure.
